About Us

AFST (I) Mumbai Chapter (formerly known as AFST (I) Western Region) was formed in 1970 under the leadership of Dr. A. S. Ganguly, Ex-Chairman of Hindustan Lever. An ad hoc committee consisting of Prof. D. V. Rege, Dr. S. S. Kalbag, Dr. U. S. Kumta, Dr. S. H. Dalal and Dr. G. K. Rao was constituted under the chairmanship of Dr. A. S. Ganguly on July 24, 1970 to form the Chapter and to start the activities. The committee discussed various steps to activate the Association through membership drive, technical seminars and other activities for the popularization of the Association. The first General Body Meeting of AFST (I), Western Region was held under the chairmanship of Prof. D. V. Rege in May, 1971 wherein the following office bearers were elected.

This was a very modest beginning but many activities were organized in the subsequent years which not only strengthened the functional capability of the association but also put the Association in sound financial footing. This was possible mainly due to the tireless and dedicated efforts of office bearers and constant support from various food industries, academic and research institutes like Institute of Chemical Technology (Formerly UDCT), BARC etc.

Currently, the AFST (I) Mumbai Chapter is one of the biggest chapters with 500+ food scientist and technologist members in and around Mumbai. AFST (I) Mumbai Chapter is always in the forefront in organizing Conferences, Seminars, Symposia, Workshops, Students award functions and factory visits for the benefits of members. The Chapter regularly holds discussion meetings on topics both basic and applied that are chosen in line with the board objectives of the Association as well as relevant and useful for the members working in food industries, research institutes, academic
institutions and food safety and quality regulators.
