World Food Safety Day Celebration 2021

AFST (I) Thrissur Chapter celebrated WF Day on 7th and 8th June 2021 online in Zoom platform with Quiz Competition, international Webinar and Panel Discussion.  It was jointly organised with Meat Technology Unit, Mannuthy, School of Zoonoses, Public Health and Pathobiology, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University and ICAR -Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) Cochin.

The online Quiz Competition on “Safe Food for Healthy Living” on 7th June 2021 was for UG (Veterinary and General), PG and PhD students in Food Science and Technology, Dairy Science, Home Science, Veterinary and Agricultural from all over the country.  Over 340 Students registered for the competition under various categories and 289 of them participated.  Abhishek Mishra, Bhuvaneswar, Srinivas K, PhD Scholar, Meghalaya, Kajal Kumari, B Tech Dairy Tech, Jharkhand and Sourabh, Hissar, the four winners under the four categories were given cash awards of Rs.1,000/ (Rupees One Thousand  only) to each.

The International Webinar on “Safe Food for Healthy Tomorrow” was on 8/06/2021. Dr. Sathu T, Assistant Professor, Department of Livestock Products Technology & Meat Technology Unit welcomed the dignitaries. Hon. Vice Chancellor of Kerala Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Prof. (Dr.) M R Saseendranath inaugurated the programme and declared the winners of the online quiz programme.

Shri Ajayakumar IAS, Commissioner of Food Safety, Kerala, the Chief Guest of the programme addressed the importance of Food Safety to the participants. In the Panel discussion on “Safe Food for Healthy Tomorrow” the members were Dr. C. Latha, Dean, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, Prof (Dr.) George T. Oommen, President, AFST (I) Thrissur Chapter, Prof (Dr.) Ajayakumar V.J, Professor, Veterinary College, Pondicherry and Dr. Zynudheen A A, Head, Quality Assurance and Management Division, CIFT, Cochin. The moderator for the panel discussion was Dr. B Sunil, Professor and Head, Meat Technology Unit, KVASU, Kerala. The panel discussed the food safety aspects in a broader scenario and suggested possible ways to ensure food safety from farm to fork.

The webinar continued with the keynote address by Prof. (Dr.) S.V.S Malik, Principal Scientist and Head (Veterinary Public Health) & Scientific Secretary to Director at ICAR- IVRI on Food Safety In One Health Perspective and Prof (Dr) Sunil Mangalassary PhD, Professor, School of Kinesiology, Nutrition and Food Science, California State University, Los Angeles on the Active Food Packaging To Ensure Food Safety : Possibilities and Limitations.

Dr. Vrinda Menon K, Assoc professor and Officer in charge, School of Zoonoses, Public Health and Pathobiology, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University proposed the vote of thanks. Faculty, students and staff from Veterinary College, College of Dairy Sci & Technology, College of Food Technology, AFST (I) members, teachers and students from various other schools and colleges across the country attended the function online.
