World Food Day - 2016 Celebrated by Hyderabad Chapter

BRIEF REPORT ON WORLD FOOD CELEBRATIONS OF AFST(I) HYDERABAD CHAPTER ON 17-10-2016

AFST (I) Hyderabad Chapter celebrated World Food Day on 17-10-2016 at CSIR- Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad in collaboration with Oil Technologists’ Association of India-Southern Zone (OTAI-SZ) and National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad by holding one day seminar. Dr. M.M. Krishna, Past President & Director, US Soybean Export Council welcomed the gathering, briefed the significance of World Food Day.  Shri A. Satyanarayana, President AFST(I), Hyderabad Chapter explained the activities of AFST (I), Hyderabad Chapter. Dr. K.V.S.A. Rao, President, OTAI (SZ) briefed the gathering about the activities of OTAI and Dr. M. Mahesh, Scientist (Extension & Training), NIN, Hyderabad briefed about the activities of NIN, Hyderabad. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. S. Chandrasekhar, Director, CSIR-IICT by lighting the lamp along with other dignitaries on the dais and conducted the proceedings. He addressed the gathering on the World Food Day focal theme “Climate is changing. Food and Agriculture must too” with special emphasis on agriculture. Dr. W. R. Reddy, Director General, National Institute of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj (NIRD & PR), Hyderabad delivered the keynote address on the World Food Day focal theme.

Felicitations were bestowed on Shri K. S. T. Shaye, Srikrupa Flavours, Hyderabad for his outstanding contribution made in the field of Development of Flavours with special reference to catering to the needs of small and medium food industries. He was presented with a fruit basket, garland, shawl and a citation on a wooden plaque. He spoke on his memories pertaining to his career and expressed his thanks to all the team, who worked with him as well as the AFST (I) office bearers for making these events vibrant. The chief guest and the other dignitaries were presented with a fruit basket, memento and a small indoor plant. All the sponsors were presented a memento and a plant. Dr. (Mrs.) T. Jyothirmayi, Hon. Secretary proposed vote of thanks. Around 200 delegates attended the programme and they were provided with a folder, memo pad, a pen and toffees provided by M/s Ravi Foods Hyderabad. A high tea was arranged after the inaugural programme.

    Three lectures were organized during technical session. Dr. Mahtab S. Bamji, INSA Emeritus Scientist, Dangoria Charitable Trust and Former Director Grade Scientist, NIN, Hyderabad spoke on “Achieving Food and Nutrition Security – India’s Dilemma”. Dr. Vilas A. Tonapi, Director, Indian Institute of Millet Research (IIMR), Hyderabad spoke on “Millets for Achieving Food and Nutrition Security”. Shri P. V. Suryaprakasa Rao, Technical Director, Priya Foods, Ushodaya Enterprises, Hyderabad spoke on “Neera- a one hundred per cent organic health beverage”. The speakers of the technical session were honoured with a memento, and a small plant. Lunch was arranged for all the participants and invitees at the CSIR - IICT canteen.   

       The afternoon session was dedicated to students. The student session was chaired by Dr. M. M. Krishna, Dr. R. B. N. Prasad, Platinum Jubilee Mentor and former Chief Scientist & Head, CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad and Shri B. Srinivasan, Vice President, AFST (I). Essay writing competition was conducted for students pursuing B. Tech., M.sc. and M. Tech. (Food Science and Technology, Nutrition and Dietetics) and 14 essays were received from different Universities. Three best essays were selected and students were given a chance to present on the World food day theme “Climate is changing. Food and Agriculture must too”. They were given an opportunity to speak on the topic with power point (PP) presentations and were judged for First, Second, and Third prizes based on their hand written assays as well as their presentation. All the participants of Essay writing competition were given Participation Certificates. The winners are Ms. D. Krishna Priya, (M.Sc. Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics) Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati (I Prize),  Mr. G. Karthik Kumar (B. Tech. Food Tech.) Osmania University College of Technology (OUCT), Hyderabad (II Prize) and Chanda Ramya, Vignan University, Vadlamudi, Guntur, Andhra Pradesh (III Prize). They were awarded cash prize of Rs. 1001/-, Rs. 801/-, and Rs. 601/-, respectively, along with a winner certificate. Two out station student winners were provided with travel allowance. The highlight of the student session was the organization of a Quiz programme conducted by Mr. Kodanda Rami Reddy, OUCT, Hyderabad with a professional touch with audio-visual rounds, current affairs, rapid fire round etc. Students pursuing Food Science and Technology from various colleges and Universities have participated. Nine teams (18 participants) from different colleges and Universities have participated in the quiz programme. Cash prizes and were awarded to the winners of the Quiz along with winning and participation certificates. Other participants were given participation certificates. The First Prize went to Ms. G. Sindhura Reddy and Ms. T. Neelima (M. Tech., Food Technology), Osmania University College of Technology, Hyderabad, II prize was awarded to Mr. M. Pranil, and Ms. V. Tejasri (B. Tech. Food Technology, PJTSAU, Hyderabad) and Third Prize to  Ms. B. Swapna and Sampa Das (M.Sc. Food Science Nutrition and Dietetics), SV University, Tirupati. They were awarded Rs.1000/-, Rs.750/- and Rs.500/- respectively. The audience who answered questions was also presented with pens. AFST (I), Hyderabad Chapter acknowledge the generous sponsorship of M/s. Priya Foods, Hyderabad, M/s Food Ingredient Specialties, Chennai and AFST (I) Mysuru.
